Bodiam Castle by the River Rother
( On the Sussex and Kent borders )

Bodiam Castle is a perfect example of a late medieval moated castle.

One of the most famous and evocative castles in Britain, Bodiam was built in
1385, as both a defence and a comfortable home. The exterior is virtually complete and the ramparts rise dramatically above the moat. Enough of the
interior survives to give an impression of castle life. There are spiral staircases
and battlements to explore and wonderful views of the Rother Valley from the
top of the towers
.

Set in open parkland, the castle is approached through a series of medieval features. The Castle itself, set in a picturesque spring fed moat, appears to be almost complete from the outside. Once entered across the modern bridge, the extent of the damage incurred during the 17th century becomes evident. However it is easy to imagine how this once grand home would have been set out. An investigation of the towers will give access to the roof and the wonderful views of the Rother Valley.
